You are invited to 麻豆影院's annual Black History Month Lecture

The lecture will take place Monday, October 28 from 4:00 - 5:30pm.

Parking Around Campus

It is important that staff and students respect our neighbours and adhere to the restrictions on parking around our campus. Please be reminded that parking on 麻豆影院 Drive is not permitted and enforcement is carried out by East Lothian Council on all roads surrounding campus. Additionally, parking on kerbs, footways and verges is not permitted as it is unsafe and causes damage.

Musselburgh Railway Station Car Park

Parking is only for Scotrail customers using Musselburgh Station. Non-customers using the station car park may be subject to enforcement action by British Transport Police under The Railway Bylaws. Those parking outwith marked bays, on double yellow lines or within disabled bays without a blue badge will be fined.

Musselburgh Controlled Parking Zone

In order to ensure that our neighbours can access their homes, parking within the residential streets adjacent campus is controlled by East Lothian Council by limited waiting times and permits. To avoid receiving a 拢100 penalty charge notice drivers should comply with the restrictions indicated by the signs and lines displayed on the street. Further details can be found . For the benefit of our neighbours please respect these restrictions and refrain from parking in residential areas around campus.

If you drive and cannot park on campus please consider the use of the local Parking & Ride facilities at Newcraighall which is within walking distance to campus and connected by direct bus services.

INSIGHTS: Teaching for Regenerative Mindsets with Alice McGrath听

(Fellowship Dimensions: V3, V4)

1st October 2024 | 14:00 鈥 15:00

Dear Colleagues

The LEAD Centre invite you to join us for a talk by Alice McGrath. Alice is a Lecturer in Arts Management and Cultural Policy, within the Media, Communication & Performing Arts Division at 麻豆影院 and is also the Programme Lead for the Arts, Festivals and Cultural Management course.

The issue of sustainable development is a complex one, and although there is increasing good practice in the area, it is now argued that sustainability and net zero is not enough.听Some argue that a new paradigm is required to move beyond sustainability and to aim instead for net positive, regenerative outcomes (Stafford et al, 2018; RSA, 2021; Ichioka and Pawlyn, 2021).听Creating and sustaining a paradigm shift is a complex process that requires collective action and new ways of being. What does this mean for teaching and learning now and in the future?

In this session Alice will discuss what is meant by a 鈥榬egenerative mindset鈥; what skills, competencies, and ways of being are needed to address this paradigm shift; and share the early developments of a framework for teaching for a Regenerative Mindset.听

This session will be of particular interest for course teams going through validation and considering how to embed sustainability within the curriculum.

Updated Assessment Regulations 2024-25

The updated Assessment Regulations for 2024-25 have been published on the University鈥檚 Quality website following approval by the University Senate in June 2024.

As can be seen below, the changes are minimal and mostly reflect the addition of new types of programme provision to the University鈥檚 portfolio. A more extensive review of the Assessment Regulations will be conducted during 2024-25 under the auspices of the Student Experience Committee.

Key changes are noted below:

  • Regulations have been incorporated covering the following new types of programme provision: Undergraduate Masters, PGDE, and online postgraduate asynchronous carousel degrees. The PGDE and Undergraduate Masters regulations replicate those already detailed in the respective Definitive Documents.

  • Minor amendments have been made to reflect arrangements for programmes with multiple intakes within an academic session or programmes which follow non-standard structure/delivery.

  • The positions of Sections 17 and 18 (Reassessment and Progression) have been swapped around from the existing regulations.

  • Regulation 17.10: This regulation has been updated as follows: Where a student is reassessed in only a pass/fail component of a module which involves other graded components, the mark will not be capped at reassessment. The attempt number will be incremented to reflect the reassessment. This update reflects that the student was unable to compensate between components at first attempt due to the pass/fail nature of the failed component.

  • Regulation 18.10f: This regulation has been changed to require postgraduate students to complete the final project within a maximum of two years from completion of the taught modules This is to support students to complete a full Masters qualification in a timely manner.

  • Regulation 18.13: This regulation has been updated as follows: Where a postgraduate student is unsuccessful in a third attempt of a taught module but has accumulated 120 credits across other postgraduate modules (which may include the final project), they may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma. This may be a named or unnamed award, depending on the validated awards for that programme. Adjustment of this regulation allows the dissertation/final project to be considered as part of the total credit accumulation.

  • Regulation 20: Guidance on limits for non-written assessments has been added to reflect the diversity of assessments.

If you have any questions about these updates, please contact June Ross, Assistant Secretary, Registry and Academic Administration.

Submission of an application does not mean that your permit request has been approved. There is no guarantee that submitting an application will result in a parking permit being issued due to limited availability.

Once an application form is received and processed, applicants will be notified by email whether their application has been successful or not. If your application is successful, you will receive guidance on how to accept your permit offer and make payment. Your permit is only valid once you fully complete this process.

Microsoft Teams - Management & Cleanup

Good Afternoon

IT are currently working to reduce the number of empty or unused Microsoft Teams groups in our environment.

To begin this process, IT will delete all empty Teams (no owners or members in the Team) starting early this week.

Going forward we will be implementing an automated feature in 365, which will flag any groups which have been unused for 180 days. The Owner of a flagged group will be sent a Renewal Notification via email.
Renewal notifications are emailed to group owners 30 days, 15 days, and one day prior to group expiration. If a group is not renewed, it is deleted along with its associated content from sources such as Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, and Power BI. The option to delete the group immediately will also be available on the notification email.

If a group does not have an owner listed, for example if the owner has left 麻豆影院, IT will be notified and will reach out to group members. We will ask that if the group is still needed, that a new owner be appointed. That owner will be responsible for maintaining and using the group going forward.

Ahead of this new system being implemented, we ask that everyone look through their Teams, and delete them if they are no longer needed. Steps to delete a Team can be found at the link below.

Many thanks for your co-operation,

麻豆影院 IT

Phishing emails

Hi,

We have had a recent influx of phishing emails to the university. Here is a reminder of what you should so if you get a phishing email.

DO NOT REPLY:

Even if you are not giving any information or think you are replying to just waste time or comment 鈥淚 know this is a phishing email" etc. This adds your email address to a metric which is likely to increase frequency of phishing emails to your account. You could also receive more sophisticated phishing emails as you have responded, and these will be engineered to get a response with information that can be exploited.

REPORT:

Phishing emails should be sent as an attachment to helpdesk@qmu.ac.uk

To forward as an attachment please follow these steps:
1.    Open the Phishing email you wish to send.
2.    Next to the 鈥淔orward" button on the top panel of the email, click 鈥淢ore" > 鈥淔orward as attachment".
3.    Add the helpdesk@qmu.ac.uk  as the address you wish to send to and click 鈥淪end".

DELETE:

Once the email has been reported please delete the email from your Inbox

Please be extra cautious when checking email on your mobile phone. The sender's name is often the only visible information on a smaller screen, and this could have been falsified. The app will allow you to click on the name to show the email address it is has come from to verify it is who you think it is.

Any questions or queries then contact me.

Phishing emails

Hi,

We have had a recent influx of phishing emails to the university. Here is a reminder of what you should do if you get a phishing email.

DO NOT REPLY:

Even if you are not giving any information or think you are replying to just waste time or comment 鈥淚 know this is a phishing email鈥 etc.

2. Next to the 鈥淔orward鈥 button on the top panel of the email, click 鈥淢ore鈥 > 鈥淔orward as attachment鈥.
3. Add the helpdesk@qmu.ac.uk as the address you wish to send to and click 鈥淪end鈥.

DELETE:

Once the email has been reported please delete the email from your Inbox

Please be extra cautious when checking email on your mobile phone. The sender鈥檚 name is often the only visible information on a smaller screen, and this could have been falsified. The app will allow you to click on the name to show the email address it is has come from to verify it is who you think it is.

Any questions or queries then contact me.

English Language Summer Schools 2024

We are delighted to be welcoming our English Language School Groups back on campus from Sunday 30th June. The language students will be our guests over the summer period and will stay on campus.

We will have approx. 675 on campus from Monday 1st July until Sunday 28th July. We will not have any students staying during August.

Our language school business provides a great opportunity to generate significant revenue from our facilities during the summer months and also raises awareness of 麻豆影院 internationally. The majority of students who will be with us this year will be coming from Italy.

We are expecting it to be very busy on campus during July so we would like to thank you in advance for your patience and help in making our guests feel welcome during their stay. This will ensure that they return home with a positive impression of Scottish hospitality and 麻豆影院.

Catering for the students will be provided within Guthrie鈥檚 and the catering times for the students are as follows:

Monday 鈥 Saturday

Breakfast 鈥 7.30am 鈥 9.00am
Lunch 鈥 12.30pm 鈥 1.30pm
Dinner 鈥 5.30pm 鈥 7.30pm

Saturday 鈥 Sunday

Breakfast 鈥 7.30am 鈥 9.00am
Lunch 鈥 Packed Lunch
Dinner 鈥 5.30pm 鈥 7.00pm

Tuck Shop

There will also be a Tuck Shop offering for the language students which will be located in the old Nook Lounge space serving Frappes, juice and snacks. The students will have a break from their classes at the following times and it is anticipated that this area will be busy during these times:
10.30am 鈥 11.00am
3.30pm 鈥 4.00pm

The language students have access to Guthrie鈥檚 the Tuck Shop and can use Starbucks too. They will not be accessing Maggie鈥檚 though.

Catering Areas for Staff & 麻豆影院 Students

The Nook offer has moved to Starbucks and this along with Maggie鈥檚 will still be open for all to enjoy, but we would anticipate the outlets to be busy between 12.00pm and 1.00pm and would ask you to plan your lunch accordingly.

The Nook (in Starbucks) will have a daily changing selection of fresh deli sandwiches, soup, paninis, toasties, salad bar, and home bakes.

Maggie鈥檚 will be running its summer menu, with daily specials available if you鈥檙e looking for something a little more 鈥 but please remember everything is cooked fresh to order in Maggie鈥檚 so may take a little longer.

The Piano Bar space will also be available for 麻豆影院 Staff and Students only if you are looking for a quiet space. Please note however there is an external event on the 16th and 24th July so it will not be available during this time.

If you have any queries at all about the language schools, please don鈥檛 hesitate to ask.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation.
