Occupational Therapy
Welcome to the Occupational Therapy section of the Practice-Based Learning (PBL) Support Web Site.
This is a full time 4-year programme. There is an option for learners to graduate with a BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy and still be eligible to register with HCPC.
This is a full time 2-year programme. There is an option for learners to graduate with a PgDip Occupational Therapy and still be eligible to register with HCPC.
Our two programmes are integrated as far as possible with learning being shared across all four routes where this is practical. Regardless of route or programme, all learners complete PBL modules at the same time and must meet the same learning outcomes.
Supporting the practice learning element of these programmes is the following Practice-based Learning Team:

Xanthe Duncan - Placement Team Coordinator, Academic Administration. Xanthe coordinates the core regulatory requirements across the PBL spectrum and ensures student's compliance.

PBL Assessment Forms
This section contains our current assessment forms for each placement. Please look at the next tab for guidance documents.
Guidance: Completion of assessment report forms (video to follow)
Midway contact 鈥 at the mid-way point of each PBL, the learner鈥檚 Personal Academic Tutor will email you using this form to check how the placement is going. Best practice is to include the learner when responding to this email. If you need support before this time or have any questions, please contact the team on OTPlacement@qmu.ac.uk.
All of the documents can be printed out using File/Print. In the case of Word forms, these are designed to be saved to your local file space using File/Save as and then completed on-screen before saving again. If required, they can then be printed out for signatures etc.

Guidance: Service user feedback
Service user feedback (if available) should be recorded in the 鈥渟ervice user comments鈥 section. Students are encouraged to consider service users鈥 perspective on their performance as this is good professional practice. This will always be a voluntary process for the service user. Students should always discuss with their practice educator before approaching a service user for feedback. Students may wish to use the information on or the itself. In some circumstances it may be more appropriate to gain feedback from carers, family members or other appropriate individuals rather than the service user, although it is recommended to seek this from the service user where possible.

Different PBL models and settings
PBL models
Traditionally practice placements have used a traditional model of one learner to one educator.
However, there are now a wide range of placement models which have been successfully used in a wide range of settings.
Considering using a different placement model has enabled new placement experiences for learners. In 2020, Joanna and Duncan completed . Here is some information about different models (please also look at information from AHP professional bodies on the external links tab):

International PBL
Occasionally, some learners can complete one of their placements outside of the United Kingdom. This can be a great opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture and experience working in a different health and social care system.
For hours to count towards your degree, your placement must be supervised (either on site or remotely) by an occupational therapist qualified from a World Federation of Occupational Therapists recognised programme. This person will need to have discussed their role with one of the placement leads so they fully understand the placement learning outcomes and can support your learning needs.
This takes a lot of planning and needs to be agreed in advance by the programme team as there are many factors to consider. If this is something you are interested in, please discuss with your personal tutor and placement lead as soon as possible. There are likely to be additional costs involved that you would need to budget for, including travel, visas, accommodation and insurance.

The Brenda Overton Memorial Award (doc link to nomination form)
Origins of the Award:
Brenda Overton was the Mother of Julie Churchill, one of our current Nursing Lecturers at 麻豆影院.
Brenda worked as an OT all her life, having left school a week before her 15th birthday with no qualifications but exited from Botley鈥檚 Park School of Occupational Therapy in 1959 with 7 distinctions in her craft work and passes in all her theory. After an initial post qualifying spell working at the Whittington Hospital in London, she moved to Kent and during 17 years at a residential school for children living with Cerebral Palsy children, became Head Occupational Therapist.
Unfortunately, during this time in the mid-1970鈥檚, Brenda was diagnosed with MS. From then on, her mobility was restricted, but that that never got in her way, and she moved roles to become Head OT at the Kent and Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells.
In the months before she died, the most important thing for Brenda was being able to achieve her goals and maintain as much independence as she could muster 鈥 exactly the approach she had taken throughout her working life with everyone she came into contact with. The support, understanding and sheer inventiveness shown by the OTs from the local hospice where she spent the last days of her life, helped her achieve this.
When she died in 2019, it seemed fitting to offer an award in her memory. This is awarded at the end of each academic year.
